The Harrisburg Southern Gateway Project focuses on transportation and associated land use planning issues at the southern entrance to the City of Harrisburg. The project extends from the 2nd Street interchange on I-83 northward between the Susquehanna River and the Amtrak lines. The northern extent of the project is Walnut Street.
The Project is designed to enhance the Southern Gateway as an entry point, while improving the roadway infrastructure in the southern part of the City. These improvements need to provide congestion reduction, roadway redundancy, alternative access and egress, and traffic calming for all types of vehicular traffic. Additionally, the system will be pedestrian friendly and should address visitor as well as commuter needs.
The Project Background is to develop a traffic system that not only moves vehicles more efficiently, but also calms traffic and provides local access.
